HOMEOSTASIS AND OJAS
All bodily functions carried in perfect order are defined by process of homeostatsis. It is a property of an organism or system that helps it maintain its parameters within a normal range of values. It is key to life, and failures in homeostasis can lead to host of ailments. It maintain a condition of equilibrium or stability within its internal environment when dealing with external changes like infections. Now, when invaded by viruses and infections, homeostais is affected and body system goes in disarray. HIV prevents the body from maintaining homeostasis by disrupting the body's ability to fight disease. When a person's immune system is healthy and functioning, it is able to ward off many pathogens, virtually unnoticed. Our skin, saliva, tears, mucous membranes, all parts of the immune system, are effective barriers against many bacteria, virus and other microorganisms. However, when the immune system is damaged, that balance between pathogens in the environment and our ability to fight them off effectively, is destroyed. Ultimately, the body's immune system is depleted. Disease sets in. The body can no longer fight disease off, and the person begins a decline that will eventually result in death.
OJAS AND SEVEN DHATUS
Homeostasis of body is maintained by Ojas of the body. Ojas gets vitiated because of many factors such as Chinta (thinking), Anashana (Fasting),(Being awake at night),(Injury), , chronic ailment, addiction to drinking, smoking, over indulgence in sex and invasion by viruses. etc. According to Ayurveda, Ojas is the essence of all of the bodily tissues. Ojas (‘Vigor) is subtle substance that’s extracted from food that has been completely digested . It is the body’s natural immunity, and it is the sustainer of life. Ojas circulates throughout the bodily tissues and heart, sustaining the physical self, bringing clarity to the mind and balancing the emotions, delivering nourishment to mind and the body and boosting our immunity to combat the invaders in any form of disease, infection.
Production of sufficient ojas substantiate the synchronized working of all seven dhatus which are working in sequence, transforming the food into vital nutrients required by each dhatus dhatu/bodily tissue and ensuring energy metabolism, micro-circulation, supply of oxygenated blood supply and nutrients to next, succeeding channel in the absence of any blockages in the form of disease, infection. Production of OJAS ensures proper assimilation, digestion and elimition of toxins in the body and working of all the three humour Vata,Pita, Kapha in equilibrium. It also substantiate the healthy agni forces working in the body, but when this by product of tissues metabolism is deficient, it signifies the body and mind are not receiving nourishment.
HIV relates to depletion of Kshaya (ojas) in the body: Ayurvedic Interpretation
HIV is a tridoshic viral infection affecting the strength and ability of the immune system to function. It causes a deficiency in life-sap, ojas. When ojas is strong the HIV virus cannot develop. Ojas is lost or diminished by excess sex, improper food, improper routine, worry and insomnia. The HIV virus uses the body’s immune cells to replicate itself. Much like a ghost, this virus does not have a body of its own and uses its host’s cells and body to function and survive. A lifestyle that reduces ojas leads to individual susceptibility to the condition. A lifestyle that results in a loss of shukra (vital fluid) is considered to increase the risk of developing the condition. THE SHUKRA TISSUE ITSELF IS CREATED AS PART OF A LONG CHAIN OF METABOLIC TRANSFORMATIONS, STARTING WITH THE DIGESTION OF FOOD AND INCLUDING THE TRANSFORMATION OF FOOD TO NUTRIENT FLUID, BLOOD, MUSCLE, FAT, BONE, BONE MARROW AND FINALLY, TO SHUKRA (male and female reproductive dhatu) TISSUE. Healthy shukra tissue, then, according to ayurveda, depends on the health of all the other tissues in the body.
SAMPRAPTI (PATHOGENESIS) HIV AYURVEDIC (OJAKSHAYA PERSPECTIVE)
The symptoms that develop from HIV have one major factor in common – movement. The symptoms seem to manifest throughout the various dhatus and strotas (tissues and channels) throughout the entire body, affecting all dhatus. Because HIV affects the white blood cells, the actual infection is located in the rasa dhatu of the rasavaha strota. “It is a constituent of rasa. (lymph)” According to the Madhava Nidanam, written around 700 A.D., the author, Madhavakara describes Vata then becomes the primary vitiated dosha in the pathogenesis. Vata vitiation then leads to pushing pitta and kapha. From this we can see the condition is sannipattika (tridoshic) with vata at the root, overflowing into the rasa dhatu and the rasavaha strota and relocating to various sites through out the body creating the classic symptoms of early HIV infection as well as later stages.
Our Medicines contain precious minerals like pearl and gold compounds for increasing the effect by quickly permeating the tissues and thereby reducing srotoavrodh of the channels, and easy transport and diffusion of nutrients through all the seven tissues.
We work on strengthening metabolic processes and removing blockages, invigorating each dhatu (channel/tissue), facilitating easy transport and diffusion of nutrients through all seven tissues. We check eratic pathways to lessen srotoavarodha (blockage of channels) and work on removing the blockages and channelize the flow of nutrition and energy among all dhatus, thereby increasing micro- circulations and opening up and purifying the complete body and thereby, provide nutrients and oxygen to the deprived cells and tissue and thus promoting OJAS, , which is the essential life energy.
Our medicines are very quick to act and start showing signs of improvement in the patient from the first dosage itself
PROGNOSIS IN ALLOPATHY AND CHIKITSA (Treatment) in Ayurveda
The treatment available in allopathy is HAART have serious side-effects and a patients gets entangled in vicious circle. Some common side effects are: Hepatoxicity (liver damage), kidney damage, Hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar), lipodystrophy (fat redistribution) and skin rash. Along with numerous others, all HIV allopathic medications list possible digestive imbalances and mood changes, anxiety/ depression, as common side affects . These medicines also causes trouble sleeping, nausea, vomitting, rash, bleeding, bone loss, lactic acidosis (high lactic acid levels in your blood), numbness, burning, or pain in hands or feet due to nerve problems
However, Ayurveda adopts a distinctive view and principle to deal with this dreadful disease, to maintain the equilibrium of the three humours (body chemicals); which are body energies responsible for homeostasis. We also stand the hypothesis that a mutual (reciprocal) growth regulation exists between the flow of nutrients among seven dhatus and immune system. Ayurveda gives the patient the framework to lead a harmonious life and build ojas. This is key in preventing the infection form further manifesting as well as managing the possible side affects associated to treat HIV.
As Immunity is a vital component of the interface between the individual & their world, and an expression of homeostasis & relationship between our bodily health, emotional well-being, and mental vision & perspective. And, dysfunction of these circuits could aggravate the infections in compromised immune system, and thereby, weakening macrophages, and altering our immune response to external stimuli and impairing the ability to thwart infections and inflammations and affecting immuno modulation process of the body. In HIV affliction, immune system is compromised and alongwith anti-viral therapy, needs immouno modulation to stimulate the immune response. Besides, need to work on destroying the habitat conditions of virus for preventing it to thrive in the body.
HEALING POTENTIAL OF HERBS:
Although some herbs can indeed stimulate immune responses, most can be best described as immune modulators, in that they facilitate greater immune system flexibility in the body’s natural response to disease. Immune modulation denotes any effect a herb will have on immune system responsiveness. For example, these herbs may stimulate T-supressor cells (thereby reduce immune resistance), and stimulate macrophages and natural killer cells. Others will enhance the production of antibodies within acting as antigens themselves.
The healing potential of plants have deep immune activation, surface immunce activation and adapotgenic action and hence, work best in conditions, when wanting to boost the body’s innate immune mechanisms in immunocompromised patients and in autoimmune disease. These are used in combination with other body system tonic herbs where a weakness has been identified and immune system needs feeding and strengthening.
Herbs which are useful in HIV infection
Kalmegh (Andrograhis paniculata), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Bhumiamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Mulethi, (Glycerrhiza glabra), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Haldi (Curcuma longa), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Pippali (Piper longum), Neem (Azardiarchata Indica), Gloe (Tinsaspora cordifolia), Mulethi (glycrrhiza glabra), Kapur Kachri (Hedychium spicatum), Vacha (Acorus calamus) and Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica). Triphala.
These medicines have anti-viral, immunomodulating and adaptogenic properties. Some of these increase body weight, yet others increase the "agni" of the body and therefore maintain cellular metabolism at an optimum level.
